Our Story

Where Ancient Craft
Meets Living Art.

Molan is a studio dedicated to preserving and reimagining China's most revered intangible cultural heritage -- Urushi lacquerware and Raden mother-of-pearl inlay -- for the contemporary world.

2,000+ Years of Tradition

Guardians of a
Disappearing Art Form.

For centuries, Chinese artisans have mastered the alchemy of Urushi -- the living sap of the lacquer tree -- layering it with microscopic fragments of abalone and freshwater pearl to create objects of extraordinary depth and iridescence. Today, fewer than a handful of masters carry this knowledge.

Molan was founded with a singular purpose: to ensure these techniques endure. Working in exclusive partnership with the Donghai Shell Carving Art Museum, we collaborate with certified heritage artisans to produce pieces that honor historical authenticity while speaking to a modern aesthetic.

A portion of every sale directly funds apprenticeship programs at the Donghai Museum, ensuring these techniques are passed to the next generation of craftspeople.
